Australia Income Tax Brackets 2026
Australian residents pay income tax on a progressive scale. Tax rates do not include the Medicare Levy (typically 2%) or offsets like LITO.
| Taxable Income Threshold | Tax Rate | Tax Payable in Bracket |
|---|---|---|
| $0 to $18,200 | 0% | $0 |
| $18,201 to $45,000 | 19% | 19c for each $1 over $18,200 |
| $45,001 to $120,000 | 32.5% | $5,092 + 32.5c for each $1 over $45,000 |
| $120,001 to $180,000 | 37% | $29,467 + 37c for each $1 over $120,000 |
| Above $180,000 | 45% | $51,667 + 45c for each $1 over $180,000 |
Medicare Levy and Offsets (LITO)
In addition to standard income tax, Australian taxpayers pay a Medicare Levy equal to 2% of taxable income to support universal healthcare.
Exemptions apply for low-income earners: individuals earning below $26,000 pay no Medicare Levy. A phase-in rate of 10% of the excess over $26,000 applies until it equals 2% of total income at $32,500.
The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) provides up to $700 of tax relief for earners up to $37,500, phasing out progressively to $0 for incomes above $66,667.

Worked Example: $80,000 Salary (Super Exclusive)
Here is how an $80,000 gross annual base salary (excluding super) is calculated:
- Gross Base Cash: $80,000.
- Superannuation contribution: $80,000 Γ 12.0% = $9,600 (paid to your super fund by employer).
- Income Tax (ATO): $16,467 raw progressive tax (LITO offset is $0 since income is over $66,667) = $16,467.
- Medicare Levy: $80,000 Γ 2% = $1,600.
- Net Take-Home Cash: $80,000 β $16,467 (Tax) β $1,600 (Levy) = $61,933 annually ($5,161.08 monthly).
State & Territory Taxes in Australia
In Australia, **personal income tax is collected solely at the federal level** by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). There are no separate state or territory personal income taxes. This simplifies calculations as tax brackets are identical whether you reside in New South Wales (NSW), Victoria (VIC), Queensland (QLD), or elsewhere.
Superannuation Contribution Rules
The Superannuation Guarantee (SG) is the compulsory system where employers pay a percentage of an employee's ordinary time earnings into a superannuation fund. In 2026, the SG rate is **12.0%**. This is paid in addition to your wage (unless your package agreement specifically states it is super-inclusive).
